AMETEK Introduces Water-Cooled Sorensen ASD Series Power Supplies

SAN DIEGO, CA – July 19, 2012AMETEK Programmable Power (www.programmablepower.com), the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions, today introduced the Sorensen ASD Series 40V and 60V precision programmable AC-DC power supplies.  The Sorensen ASD’s water-cooled packaging allows it to provide up to 30 kW of power in a 3U form factor, giving it unrivaled power density for a power supply in this class.  Being water cooled, it is ideal for precision programmable power applications with stringent air quality requirements such as clean rooms or industrial environments that are dirty or potentially corrosive and damaging to air-cooled power supplies. 

The ASD DSP-based digital architecture, with real-time digital control and Graphical User Interface (GUI), enables advanced features for better control and monitoring of critical processes and applications.

For example, the optional advanced features package includes a built-in oscilloscope function for measurement and display of: power, voltage, current, output impedance, output cable impedance and output cable voltage drop. The ASD provides the ability to program different “fault levels,” enabling detection of output cabling, connection or load problems before they cause critical system problems. The ASD can replace a system programmable logic device (PLC) by closing the loop on an external parameter such as temperature.

Additionally, the ASD’s Advanced Diagnostics And Maintenance (ADAMSM) function includes a “flight data recorder” feature that can capture and record multiple parameters facilitating troubleshooting and process improvement.

AMETEK Expands Sorensen SG Series DC Power Supplies

The SG Series has exceptionally fast load transient response, low noise, and ease-of-use.

SAN DIEGO, CA – March 29, 2012AMETEK Programmable Power www.programmablepower.com today announced an expansion of its popular Sorensen SG Series DC Power Sources to include a 50V model. Output voltages now range from 0-10VDC to 0-800VDC, currents up to 2400A, and power up to 150kW. With the recent expansion there are now over 100 different models for each of two separate versions (SGA and SGI) in the series. This extensive variety allows the user to better optimize voltage and current for their application resulting in the lowest cost for a specific application. In addition, the standard SG models provide slew rates typically 2.5X as fast and ripple 50 percent lower than competitive models. In some cases, SG models provide slew rates an order of magnitude better. The exceptionally fast load transient response, low noise, and ease-of-use across the SG Series accounts for one of the largest installed bases in the industry. In addition, the air-cooled SG units are high reliability power supplies that come with a five-year warranty.

Features to Match Your Applications
Expansion of the Sorensen SG Series has reduced the cost of ownership for many applications. Users can choose a model with an output voltage, current and power combination best tailored to their needs, resulting in the optimum price/performance ratio. For example, the new 0-50V model provides an output of up to 100A at 5kW in a single unit. That allows the customer to avoid jumping to 10kW 60V when their application only needs 5kW of power at 50V.

The SGA version comes with industry leading price/performance characteristics and is designed for users that most often use simple front panel analog controls or a remote serial interface. Features include 10-turn potentiometers for setting voltage and current, a 3½-digit LED readout, front panel over-voltage protection (OVP) preview/adjustment and reset, and multiple remote interface options. The SGI version provides advanced onboard intelligent controls that enable sophisticated sequencing, constant power mode and save/recall of instrument settings. Looping of sequences makes the SGI ideal for repetitive testing. An impressive vacuum fluorescent graphical display in eight languages, context sensitive “soft” keys, and front panel keyboard simplify programming of the SGI.

Both versions have a load transient response that recovers within 1ms to ±0.75% of full-scale of steady state output for a 50%-to-100% or 100%-to-50% load change. Ripple and noise are as low as 20mv rms at full load (which depends on specific model and test conditions). Power factor correction (PFC) of 0.90 comes standard in the 50V, 30V and below models. PFC is available as an option in all other models.

The Sorensen SG product family features excellent power density, along with modular expandability that results in compact 5-15kW/3U and 20-30kW/6U rack designs. In addition to RS-232, they are available with optional LXI Class C Ethernet (including hardware trigger input) or IEEE-488.2 (GPIB) interfaces. All units provide precision programming and read back accuracy, including remote sense. As many as five chassis can be paralleled to operate as a single supply, providing maximum system output power up to 150kW. This expansion capability allows the SG Series to meet requirements in a wide range of test applications, from hybrid automobiles to inverters to semiconductors, and many more. Front and side air inlets with rear exhaust and temperature-controlled variable-speed fans allow these air-cooled units to be stacked without spacing between. AMETEK Programmable Power Adds LXI Compliance To California Instruments AC/DC Power Sources

SAN DIEGO, CA – November 7, 2011 – AMETEK Programmable Power(www.programmablepower.com), a leader in AC and DC programmable power test solutions, has added LXI compliance to most of its California Instruments AC/DC power sources. LXI is a widely adopted industry standard for LAN/Ethernet connectivity among various instrument manufacturers in order to create high-speed, high channel-count or remote measurement systems using standard Ethernet interfaces.

Herman van Eijkelenburg, Director of Product Marketing for AMETEK Programmable Power, notes, “This upgrade to our California Instruments products allows our customers to easily connect, configure and control these power sources wherever they are located – benchtop, network, or in distributed or remote locations. In addition, they can be easily integrated with other LXI instruments to create multifunction automated test equipment (ATE) systems that are highly efficient and flexible. While other power source manufacturers may offer selected products with LXI capabilities, the California Instruments product line is one of the few to offer an LXI interface option on a wide variety of models.”

AMETEK Programmable Power has the widest selection of LXI-compliant AC sources and DC power supplies available in the market. Van Eijkelenburg states that AMETEK added LXI (LAN eXtensions for Instrumentation) to its California Instruments product line for a variety of reasons.

“The LXI standard has seen the fastest ramp-up of any data communications protocol in the history of the test industry,” he notes, “and is rapidly becoming the de facto standard for ATE systems.”

To date, the LXI Consortium (www.lxistandard.org) has certified nearly 1600 commercially available LXI-compliant instruments from 32 different manufacturers in 197 distinct product families.

“With this many LXI products now on the market it’s easy for an engineer to create a complete LXI instrument-based test system, and most test engineers expect this level of compatibility with other instruments in their systems,” he says.

The California Instruments product line now consists of more than a dozen different series of AC/DC power sources and power analyzers with LXI interfaces, supplying outputs from 135VLN to 400VLN, currents up to 1500Arms, and total power output up to 540kVA. These benchtop, rack and cabinet mounted systems can supply single and three-phase AC power at output frequencies from 16-5,000Hz. To support a wide range of applications, they are available with a variety of other features, including arbitrary and harmonic waveform generators, built-in digital power analyzers, scope capture capabilities, and Windows software. In addition to remote control via LXI, an operator can also use front panel control via menu selection.

These features, plus precision readback and measurement capabilities, make the California Instruments line ideal for testing today's complex electronics in a broad range of applications, including avionics, telecommunications and commercial electronics requiring low profile, lightweight power supplies.
