SAN DIEGO– March 14, 2013AMETEK Programmable Power, the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions, announces that its ReFlex Power™ (RFP) System is now qualified for use in standard Department of Defense (DoD) ATS (Automated Test Systems) across all major military branches. It is the only power system on the market that satisfies all of the military services’ test protocols, including  the Navy’s electronic Consolidated Automated Support System (eCASS), scheduled to be deployed in 2015 as well as the Marines’ Reconfigurable Transportable CASS (RTCASS) program,  the Army’s Next Generation Automatic Test System (NGATS), and the Air Force’s Versatile Depot Automatic Test Station (VDATS).

AMETEK’s RFP System is a high-density, modular power system with a full complement of power and load modules for designing flexible and scalable power solutions. Comprised of a mainframe, a controller module and various plug-in power modules (DC modules, AC modules, and active loads with scalable power levels), the ReFlex Power system can be configured for control of discrete, power supplies and loads, and it can be extended to as many as eight mainframes and 95 power modules, all controlled through a single controller module.

The RFP System uses digital control loops that allow users to tailor system performance to match application requirements. In addition to the high power densities available, the ReFlex Power system provides series, parallel, or multiphase operation, and high-speed up/down programming capability.  Communication interfaces include an LXI™-compliant Ethernet interface, IVI drivers and an embedded Web server.

 The ReFlex Power system’s highly integrated architecture reduces cost of ownership and logistics with its minimal space requirements and low maintenance, a common software interface and the ability to create “virtual assets” with various voltage/current combinations through one controller.

In April 1994, the DoD released a memorandum on ATS acquisitions that directed the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines to use designated ATS families. The memo named the Army’s Integrated Family of Test Equipment (IFTE) and the Navy’s CASS system as the initial ATS families. It also specified that Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) testers and components were permitted for use at the depot and factory levels of maintenance. Since then, the services have all updated and standardized their ATS systems. The goals of this directive include:

  • reducing the total cost of ownership of automatic test systems for weapon systems support at DoD field, depot and manufacturing operations
  • reducing the logistics footprint of automatic test systems
  • promoting joint service automatic test systems interoperability
  • improving the quality of tests while reducing repair cycle times

AMETEK has played an important role in these military ATS programs from the beginning, providing power supplies for both the early CASS and IFTE programs.  For the Marines’ RTCASS program, AMETEK worked with prime contractors to develop a power system that was small in footprint as well as modular and configurable. AMETEK’s experience with military ATE power systems helped its engineers distill the requirements and design a power solution that provides the power range and flexibility needed with the fewest number of modules.

Three New Elgar ETS Series Models Enable Test of Next-Generation Inverters

SAN DIEGO – September 11, 2012 – AMETEK Programmable Power (www.programmablepower.com), the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions, has expanded its Elgar TerraSAS™ line with the ETS Series Standalone Photovoltaic (PV) Simulator. The new Series includes three models for testing PV inverters across a wide spectrum of applications:

  • ETS 80 to test micro-inverters or DC optimizers up to 80Vdc Voc
  • ETS 600 for testing string inverters that contain transformer isolation up to 600Vdc Voc
  • ETS 1000 for non-isolated string inverters up to 1000Vdc Voc.

The ETS 600 and ETS 1000 are 3U rack units, while the ETS 80 comes in a 1U package. The ETS 80 also is cost effective, being 30 to 40 percent less expensive than units with comparable output specifications.

For microgrids, energy storage, and inverter test applications, TerraSAS PV Simulators are specifically designed to emulate the dynamic electrical behavior of a terrestrial PV solar array.  They offer low output capacitance and high closed loop bandwidth to keep up with the advanced Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms used in today's grid-tied inverters.

All Elgar ETS Series units are high-performance solutions packaged in a small form factor that combine an agile power supply, an innovative I-V curve generator, output isolation and Graphical User Interface (GUI) in a single, standalone unit. 

The Elgar TerraSAS and ETS Series PV simulators are based on high-speed versions of Elgar power supplies, where output capacitors, advanced DSP signal processing techniques, and other speed-limiting components have been adjusted to create a proprietary solution more advanced than any other solar array simulator on the market. This combination of hardware, software, and firmware allows the TerraSAS to simulate test protocols or combinations of events that a real-world solar installation is subjected to. 

Under some conditions, traditional DC power sources using Insulated-Gate Bipolar Transistors(IGBT) technology do not meet MPPT response speed requirements.  Elgar ETS Series units use Power MOSFETs, which typically switch ten times as fast as the most recent IGBTs. Higher switching frequency translates to smaller output capacitors and inductors - which is the key to a successful high speed power supply design.

 In addition to the base technologies employed, the ETS Series’ capability for tracking high-speed MPPT algorithms is unmatched.  Each ETS model can deliver a maximum tracking speed with less than 5o phase error between voltage and current waveforms.  This translates to inverter design validation data you can trust.

Using the GUI, users can easily create I-V curves by entering parametric data, simulate standards-based cloudy condition scenarios and simulate arrays of PV panels. The system also can be remotely controlled and addressable as a single device via a standard Ethernet or optional GPIB interface using standard SCPI format commands.

AMETEK Ships 1 MVA AC+DC Grid Simulation System to NREL

New System to be Used by Government Labs for Energy System Testing

SAN DIEGO – July 30, 2012AMETEK Programmable Power (www.programmablepower.com), the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions, recently shipped  a regenerative 1 MVA AC + DC source system to the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) on the campus of the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado. The system, which is to be used for grid simulation in the test and evaluation of advanced energy systems such as micro-grids and renewable energy inverters, is based on AMETEK’s California Instruments RS Series High-Power AC source.

Dubbed the RS1M, the twelve chassis solution consists of four RS270 systems, each system defined as three 90kVA chassis. Each RS270 system is capable of generating 270 kVA of 3 ø power at up to 692 Vac (L-L). Four control chassis allow ESIF engineers to remotely configure the entire solution as a single 1 MVA, two 540 kVA, four separate 270 kVA, or one 810 kVA and one 270 kVA system. This capability will give ESIF the flexibility it needs to size the simulated power grid appropriately for the devices being tested, as well as understand how different renewable energy technologies interact with each other in a distributed generation micro-grid.

A key feature of the simulation system is the ability to present the device under test (DUT) with anomalous grid conditions. The RS Series source has a built-in capability to generate these grid anomalies, but, to support the ESIF “hardware in the loop” (HIL) simulation requirements, the RS1M was customized to allow ESIF engineers to control it in real time via external drive signals. These modifications bypass the system controller to permit the external signals to directly control the high-power source, thus eliminating any control signal delays.

Hardware-in-the-loop simulation is not a new concept, but adding megawatt-scale power takes research to another level. ESIF’s Smart Power Lab will use the HIL simulators for research and development of the power electronics components, circuits, and controls used in clean and sustainable energy integration. This allows researchers and manufacturers to conduct component and system tests at full power and actual load levels in real-time.

RS Series’ key features include:

•   Power regeneration. The RS Series can re-capture and return to the facility’s utility grid up to 85 percent of the inverter’s output, or, in other words, up to 85 percent of the energy inputted to the inverter, which is sourced from the facility grid during testing. This reduces costs in two ways:

•   Energy costs directly related to driving the DUT
  Heat load on the facility HVAC system and therefore resultant secondary energy use and cost

•   Simplified test configuration. This approach eliminates the need for traditional AC source and load combinations with complex controllers.  

•   Sophisticated signal generation and measurement. The RS Series uses a sophisticated digital signal processor-based arbitrary waveform generator and power analyzer for the generation, measurement and documentation of anomalous grid conditions. This integrated, multi-instrument approach effectively eliminates the need for additional equipment to create a complete AC power test system

The Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) will be the nation’s first facility able to conduct integrated megawatt-scale research and development of the components and strategies needed to safely move clean energy technologies onto the electrical grid. While the facility will support R&D efforts that span the entire electric power system, it will focus on electric systems, buildings and facility systems, community power generation and microgrids; utility generation, thermal and hydrogen systems, energy efficient and advanced grid technologies; electricity system architectures, interoperability; and utility generation and grids that incorporate renewable energy (solar, wind, hydrogen, and advanced vehicles).
