New Sorensen SG 1000V DC Power Supply Extends Capabilities to High-Voltage Applications
- Posted on 07/05/13 06:39PM

Ideal for 1kV applications including testing PV inverters and electric vehicles

SAN DIEGO – May 07, 2013 – The global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions, AMETEK Programmable Power (www.programmablepower.com), has extended its Sorensen SG Series high-power DC power supply line with the introduction of the new SG 1000V, which can supply up to 1,000V DC for applications such as testing photovoltaic (PV) inverters and electric vehicles.

The Sorensen SG Series leads the industry in power density and is one of the industry’s most widely used DC power supplies in its class with more than 20,000 units in the fieldThe quality of power supplied by Sorensen SG Series makes it well suited for a very broad range of applications, including test and measurement for devices such as PV inverters and electric vehicles, semiconductor processing, electroplating, and for imagers such as CT and MRI scanners that are used as luggage scanners for homeland security.

The new 1000V DC model of SG Series power supplies can provide up to 15 kW in a 3U package. The SG 1000V, for example, can supply up to 15 A in the standard 3U package. Users also can select from 5 kW and 10 kW models. For users who need more output power, up to five 15 kW units can be connected in parallel to supply up to 75 kW. In addition, the Sorensen SG Series offers fast voltage and current slew rates, exceptional load transient response, low noise, and built-in power factor correction.

All of the models in the SG Series are available with either Sorensen General-purpose Intelligent (SGI) control or Sorensen General-purpose Analog (SGA) control. Units with SGI control combine on-board intelligent controls with the outstanding power electronics common to all SG Series supplies. These controls enable sophisticated sequencing, constant power mode and save/recall of common setups, making the SGI-capable unit ideal for repetitive testing using complex or compliance waveforms. The unit features a vacuum fluorescent graphical display in eight languages, context sensitive “soft” keys and front panel keyboard simplify programming of the SGI.  A popular and unique SG option is a factory-installed dust filter for 3U units.

Units with SGI control come with a standard RS-232C port. GPIB/IEEE 488.2 and LXI Ethernet ports are optional features. Units with SGA control are designed for users who require simple front panel analog controls or external control. With the same high- performance power electronics as the SGI, the SGA-configured unit provides essential features such as 10-turn potentiometers for setting voltage and current, 3½ digit LED readout plus front panel over-voltage protection (OVP) preview/adjustment and reset. Units with SGA control come standard with remote analog control and can be fitted with an RS-232C port, a GPIB/IEEE 488.2, and an LXI Ethernet port as optional features.

New California Instruments BPS Series: Affordable, Expandable and High Performance
- Posted on 10/04/13 07:02PM

BPS Series provides power from 30 kVA to 180 kVA with four remote-control options for voltage and frequency conversion test applications

SAN DIEGO, April 10, 2013AMETEK Programmable Power, the global leader in  programmable AC and DC power test solutions (www.programmablepower.com), has released the California Instruments BPS Series of high-power AC sources/frequency converters.

Available with outputs ranging from 30 kVA to 180 kVA, the BPS is the latest series of products to use AMETEK's high-performance, pulse-width modulation (PWM) switching technology to provide cost-effective solutions for AC power test applications. The BPS Series supports four different communications busses and has a powerful AC transient generation capability, making it ideal for commercial instrumentation manufacturing, automatic test stations, AC motor test, and avionic frequency conversion.

Modular architecture allows chassis to be paralleled for high power. The BPS Series offers a wide output frequency range of 16 to 819 Hz, making it well-suited for aerospace applications. For higher power requirements, users can simply parallel the BPS Series in a multi-cabinet configuration.

To meet the needs of manufacturers of high-power equipment and appliances that must test their products over a wide range of input line conditions, the BPS Series offers built-in output transient generation. This feature allows users to simulate a wide variety of AC line conditions. Transient generation is independent, yet time synchronized, on all three phases. Accurate phase angle control and synchronized transient list execution provides accurate positioning of AC output events.

The BPS Series combines compactness, robustness and functionality in a compact floor-standing chassis.  This higher power density has been accomplished without the need to resort to elaborate cooling schemes or additional installation wiring. Users simply roll the unit to where they want it, plug it in, and the BPS Series is ready to operate.

The BPS Series can be programmed manually via the front panel or remotely with USB, RS-232, IEEE-488 (GPIB) or optional Ethernet interfaces. A Graphical Users Interface Software is included with all BPS Series allowing easy programming of all functions.

AMETEK Becomes Only Power Supply Company Supporting Standard DoD ATS Families Across All Four Military Branches

AMETEK Programmable Power Products Qualified For CASS, RTCASS, NGATS, VDATS and eCASS

SAN DIEGO– March 14, 2013AMETEK Programmable Power, the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions, announces that its ReFlex Power™ (RFP) System is now qualified for use in standard Department of Defense (DoD) ATS (Automated Test Systems) across all major military branches. It is the only power system on the market that satisfies all of the military services’ test protocols, including  the Navy’s electronic Consolidated Automated Support System (eCASS), scheduled to be deployed in 2015 as well as the Marines’ Reconfigurable Transportable CASS (RTCASS) program,  the Army’s Next Generation Automatic Test System (NGATS), and the Air Force’s Versatile Depot Automatic Test Station (VDATS).

AMETEK’s RFP System is a high-density, modular power system with a full complement of power and load modules for designing flexible and scalable power solutions. Comprised of a mainframe, a controller module and various plug-in power modules (DC modules, AC modules, and active loads with scalable power levels), the ReFlex Power system can be configured for control of discrete, power supplies and loads, and it can be extended to as many as eight mainframes and 95 power modules, all controlled through a single controller module.

The RFP System uses digital control loops that allow users to tailor system performance to match application requirements. In addition to the high power densities available, the ReFlex Power system provides series, parallel, or multiphase operation, and high-speed up/down programming capability.  Communication interfaces include an LXI™-compliant Ethernet interface, IVI drivers and an embedded Web server.

The ReFlex Power system’s highly integrated architecture reduces cost of ownership and logistics with its minimal space requirements and low maintenance, a common software interface and the ability to create “virtual assets” with various voltage/current combinations through one controller.

In April 1994, the DoD released a memorandum on ATS acquisitions that directed the Army, Navy, Air Force and Marines to use designated ATS families. The memo named the Army’s Integrated Family of Test Equipment (IFTE) and the Navy’s CASS system as the initial ATS families. It also specified that Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) testers and components were permitted for use at the depot and factory levels of maintenance. Since then, the services have all updated and standardized their ATS systems. The goals of this directive include:

  • reducing the total cost of ownership of automatic test systems for weapon systems support at DoD field, depot and manufacturing operations
  • reducing the logistics footprint of automatic test systems
  • promoting joint service automatic test systems interoperability
  • improving the quality of tests while reducing repair cycle times

AMETEK has played an important role in these military ATS programs from the beginning, providing power supplies for both the early CASS and IFTE programs.  For the Marines’ RTCASS program, AMETEK worked with prime contractors to develop a power system that was small in footprint as well as modular and configurable. AMETEK’s experience with military ATE power systems helped its engineers distill the requirements and design a power solution that provides the power range and flexibility needed with the fewest number of modules.
