AMETEK’s TerraSAS Solar Array Simulator Enhances Micro-Inverter Testing

New TerraSAS provides turn-key solution for testing grid-tied inverters and DC charge controllers; High-speed response enhances maximum power point (MPP) tracking simulation

SAN DIEGO, Calif., U.S.A., March 31, 2010— The Elgar brand TerraSAS Solar Array Simulator from
AMETEK Programmable Power offers a fully integrated solution for the design, development and production testing of inverters and micro-inverters for domestic and industrial solar energy systems. The TerraSAS simulates photovoltaic (PV) dynamic solar irradiance and temperature characteristics over a range of weather conditions from clear to cloudy and over a specified time interval to produce the current / voltage (IV) characteristics for the specified PV array for those conditions.

For ease of use, the system’s simulation engine is able to download data from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) Solar Advisor Model database defining key parameters - open circuit voltage (Voc), short circuit current (Isc) and maximum power point voltage (Vmpp) at 25 degrees C and 1000 W/m2 irradiance - so that the IV curve can be calculated according to a standard solar cell model for virtually any fill factor or solar material. Other PV panel IV curves can be entered manually. Systems with multiple panels with different characteristics resulting in “multiple hump” IV curves also can be simulated. In addition, the TerraSAS is capable of simultaneously simulating up to 24 parallel channels for use with micro-inverters.

“An essential part of this testing is to provide the inverter under test with accurate simulation of the PV array response to its maximum power point tracking (MPP) function. To perform this task, the power source must accurately process the PV array's IV curve without filtering the low frequency ripple voltage produced by the inverter to track MPP,” comments Eric Turner, AMETEK product manager for TerraSAS.

“The TerraSAS delivers an order of magnitude improvement in this critical response over conventional switch mode DC power sources. The application of high-speed switching power supplies and advanced DSP signal processing allows us to attain superior MPP tracking response without the need for bulky and expensive linear power supplies," notes Turner.

The modular, rack-mounted Elgar TerraSAS system offers the following:

AMETEK’s Sorensen XG 1700 Packs 1700W into Programmable DC Supply

SAN DIEGO, Calif., -- November 18, 2009 -- The Sorensen XG 1700 Series delivers an industry-leading 1700 watts of programmable DC output well-suited for test, production, laboratory, OEM and quality assurance applications. Offered in 12 models with fully programmable output voltage ranges from 6V to 600V, the XG 1700 delivers a tightly regulated, low noise, low ripple output in both constant voltage and constant current modes. The XG 1700 also provides two low-power auxiliary DC output channels suitable for driving control relays or powering other system accessories.

The Sorensen XG 1700 1U package is designed for compact rack mounting of multiple units. Up to 30 units can be configured into a one-master, multi-slave multichannel power subsystem using simple RJ-45 terminated interconnections. The unit also features a “Green” sleep mode, automatically powering down when idle.

In addition to precise, digital encoder front panel control and simultaneous voltage and current displays, the XG 1700 includes standard RS232/RS485 and USB remote control interfaces. It also offers optional GPIB and LXI Class C Ethernet control inputs. Commonly used, SCPI compliant, device drivers are available to support system applications. Analog control and read-back full scale signals can be user defined, from 0 to 2V to 0 to 10V in a continuously variable manner, facilitating easy substitution of the XG 1700 into existing test or process control systems.

The XG 1700 supports autonomous program sequencing with the capability to store, recall and execute pre-programmed test routines including the operation of the auxiliary outputs, minimizing command latency and system controller overhead and thereby maximizing system throughput.

SAN DIEGO, CA, U.S.A.— New Sorensen XEL-P Series advanced linear regulated bench-top power supply from AMETEK Programmable Power offers all of the manual control features of the Sorensen XEL Series but adds comprehensive remote control programmability. With power up to 90 watts, the ultra-compact, 1/4-rack, 3U sized programmable power supply is ideal for rack mounted applications, while its user friendly manual controls are well suited for bench-top applications.

To support the needs of today’s engineers, the Sorensen XEL-P offers a comprehensive array of interfaces. RS-232, USB and LAN (Ethernet) certified to LXI Class C are provided as standard, with an additional GPIB interface available as an option. Each of these digital bus interfaces provides full control of voltage, current and output on/off plus read-back of voltage, current and status. The interfaces are at ground potential and are opto-isolated from the output terminals.

From the front, XEL-P models are identical to standard XEL models and retain all of their manual control features. However, power and sense terminals are duplicated on the rear panel of each unit for further flexibility and convenience in applications where rear connections are more appropriate, such as rack-mounting. Up to four single output units can be mounted side by side in a standard rack width. Additionally, any combination of single and dual units can be integrated with the optional rack-mount kit.

The Sorensen XEL Series family provides digital precision but retains true analog control for easy bench operation. All XEL supplies also come with the Output Enable feature that allows preview of the voltage and current settings before turning on the output. While a simple feature, it protects against device damage by allowing the user to verify the settings before applying them to the device being tested.

Along with Output Enable, the XEL Series comes with the V-Span function that increases resolution by allowing users to redefine voltage minimum and maximum limit values within a specific voltage range. Limits can be set at any level up to the rating of the power supply. The voltage span function can be turned on and off with the push of a button.

The ultra-compact design of the XEL Series further allows for higher power efficiency and near-silent cooling. Despite its small size and linear regulation, the XEL Series generates little heat through the use of an advanced phase controlled pre-regulator. This gives the XEL Series significantly higher energy efficiency than conventional linear regulated designs, particularly when supplying lower voltages. In addition, internal heat-sinks use low-noise fan assisted convection cooling to remove heat.
