Photovoltaic Simulator Provides Higher Output Current and Power, Increasing Rack Space Power Density by 50%

SAN DIEGO, August 25, 2015 – AMETEK Programmable Power, the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions (programmablepower.com), has expanded its industry-leading Elgar Terrestrial Solar Array Simulators (TerraSAS™) line of standalone photovoltaic (PV) simulators.

With the newest Embedded TerraSAS™ (ETS), users can now test isolated and non-isolated string inverters with voltages (Voc) up to 1,000 VDC and currents (Isc) up to 15 A, resulting in a 50% increase in output power compared to the prior 1000X ETS model. The new ETS1000Y is available in three configurations: [5kW] 1,000 VDC @ 5 A, [10kW] 1,000 VDC @ 10 A and [15kW] 1,000 VDC @ 15 A.

The TerraSAS™ PV simulator consists of an agile high-performance, programmable DC power supply with control software and GUI interface, high output isolation, and a unique embedded PV simulation engine that provides the I-V curve in a single standalone unit. The power supplies in the TerraSAS™ PV simulators are typically ten times faster than standard power supplies, allowing users to test even the most advanced solar inverters.

In addition to this industry-leading performance, the new ETS now offers improved Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) and Over-Current Protection (OCP). This allows the device to be used for sensitive simulation applications without tripping, such as inverter testing in electrically “noisy” environments.

AMETEK Programmable Power developed the TerraSAS™ line for testing microgrids, energy storage and inverter test applications.  The TerraSAS™ series photovoltaic (PV) simulators are specifically designed to emulate the dynamic electrical behavior of a terrestrial PV solar array. They offer low output capacitance and high closed loop bandwidth to keep up with the advanced Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms used in today’s grid-tied inverters.

The new ETS versions can be configured to use a 3-phase AC input voltage of 187-242 VAC, 342-440 VAC, or 396-528 VAC. Output voltage noise is less than 0.6 Vpp, and output current noise is less than 200 mApp.

AMETEK ADDS DC REGENERATIVE SINK OPTION CAPABILITY

Power Sources and Grid Simulators Can Now Sink and Regenerate DC and AC Current Back to the Electric Grid Significantly Reducing Operating Costs

SAN DIEGO, CA – AMETEK Programmable Power, the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions (programmablepower.com), has added the ability to sink DC current to its California Instruments' RS and MX Series Power Sources

The addition of this option to an RS or MX Series power source with AC Sink installed allows users to source and sink both AC and DC currents at up to 100 percent of the source's rated output power. When sinking current, the current is regenerated and returned to the electrical grid reducing the operating cost of electricity.

There are many applications for sinking AC current, such as the prevalent need to regenerate current back to the electrical grid while testing grid-tied inverters. A common DC sink application, among others, is to simulate batteries connected to a bidirectional converter in hybrid electric vehicle motor drive systems.

When purchasing a new RS or MX Series power source, customers can purchase the SNK option to sink only AC current, the SNK-DC option to sink only DC current, or both options for ultimate versatility. Upgrading an existing RS unit can be done by AMETEK, depending on the age of the unit.  Consult factory for further details.

New AMETEK System for Energy Grid Testing Will Become Largest AC Grid Simulator in the World

SAN DIEGO – April 21, 2015AMETEK Programmable Power, the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions, announced that the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory(NREL) has placed an order for its second regenerative AC/DC High Power Source. 

When installed in parallel with the previous California Instruments RS Series units purchased in 2013, the new system will have the capability to supply up to 2 MVA, making it not only the largest system built by AMETEK Programmable Power, but the largest known AC Grid Simulator in the world with the bandwidth and modularity of the RS system.

NREL’s advanced energy group plans to use the high power inverter for characterization and testing of electrical grid systems.  Specifically, the systems are being used at NREL’s Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF), the nation’s first facility that can conduct integrated megawatt-scale research and development of the components and strategies needed to safely move clean energy technologies onto the electrical grid.

The California Instruments RS Series of high-power AC/DC power systems provide controlled AC and DC outputs for a wide variety of Research, ATE and Test applications. The RS Series provides a powerful combination of high power density and simple installation without the need for elaborate cooling schemes. 

Each of the two systems consists of four RS270 units, each capable of generating 270 kVA of power. Eight control chassis allow NREL engineers to remotely configure the system as a single 2 MVA, two 1MVA systems, four 540 kVA units, two 810 kVA unit and two 270 kVA unit, or eight, separate 270 kVA units. This capability will give NREL the flexibility it needs to simulate power grids to better understand how different renewable energy technologies interact with each other.

In addition, the systems have been customized to allow NREL engineers to control it in real time via external drive signals. These modifications bypass the system controller and allow the external signals to directly control the high-power source. This eliminates processing delays and allows the system to be used with NREL’s hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) simulators.

Hardware-in-the-loop simulation is not a new concept, but adding megawatt-scale power takes research to another level. In a power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) experiment, portions of a power system being studied are modeled in software, while other portions exist as actual hardware. 

The hardware components interact with the software model via an interface, which includes a power amplifier capable of converting digital or low-level analog representations of modeled quantities into electrical power waveforms.  In this way, the power amplifier can be controlled to apply the same electrical waveform to the hardware components that those components would have seen had they been connected to a real-world power system instead of a model.  NREL will use the AMETEK grid simulator(s) as the power amplifiers for MW-scale PHIL experiments.

Other key features of the RS Series include:

  • Power regeneration. The RS Series can return up to 85 percent of the power generated by an inverter, meaning the ESIF consumes 85 percent less energy during testing. This approach eliminates the need for traditional AC source and load combinations.  The result is a simplified system configuration while offering up to 85 percent less heat dissipation. That not only reduces energy costs but also drastically reduces air- conditioning requirements.
     

  • Sophisticated signal generation and measurement. The RS Series uses a sophisticated digital signal processor-based arbitrary waveform generator and power analyzer. This integrated, multi-instrument approach effectively eliminates the need for additional equipment to create a complete AC power test system.
