AMETEK Programmable Power Launches Asterion™ AC/DC Power Platform with Current-Doubling iX2™ Technology

SAN DIEGO, May 11, 2016 – AMETEK Programmable Power, the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions, manufacturing such brands as California Instruments™, Sorensen™ and Elgar™ (www.programmablepower.com), has introduced a new AC and DC power platform that establishes new industry benchmarks in power density, performance, and ease of use.
AMETEK’s initial platform launch is for its California Instruments AsterionTM AC Power Source, available in 500VA, 750VA and 1500VA power levels. Asterion relies on a variety of technical innovations that allow it to be one of the most powerful AC sources on the market. Asterion offers users a compelling combination of intelligence, performance, and modularity that make it the most adaptable and affordable platform available today.
AMETEK has long been known for supplying power sources with leading power density. The Asterion is no exception with up to 1500VA in a 1U (44.45mm/1.75in) height package; that is two to three times the power density of comparable, competitive power sources.
At the heart of Asterion’s breakthrough performance is AMETEK’s powerful new iX2™ current-doubling technology. With iX2, as the output voltage decreases from maximum to one-half maximum, Asterion’s available output current increases up to two times the rated output current. That allows Asterion to maintain maximum power throughout the voltage range, making it unmatched in delivering full output power over such a wide voltage range. In addition, iX2 current-doubling technology eliminates a common need to buy multiple sources or overpowered sources to run tests at different voltage levels, such as when performing low line voltage testing.
Other unique platform benefits are Auto-Paralleling and Clock/Lock to achieve higher output power and multi-phase configuration. Users can combine up to six units to achieve 9,000 VA per phase of output power. One unit becomes the master while the rest serve as auxiliary units. System setup can be accomplished using a single front panel or digital interface. Multi-phase systems can be configured for split-phase, three-phase, or even higher phase count requirements.
Users are able to purchase only the power they need today and easily add more power and/or phases later as required. That scalability, along with the ability to expand easily as required, helps protect the value of the initial investment and allows additional capital spending to be deferred until needed.
The Asterion's power performance specifications are equally impressive. For example, the Asterion offers wide AC and DC output voltage ranges with an accuracy of +/-0.2% from DC to 1 kHz. Load and line regulation are +/-0.025% and +/-0.015%,respectively, making the Asterion more accurate than most other AC power sources on the market.
Furthermore, test engineers will appreciate the Asterion AC source’s ease of use, which is based on an entirely new user interface developed by AMETEK specifically for the platform. The intuitive, touch-screen interface, unique on an AC source, allows users to quickly and easily set up the source and run tests.
Asterion is at home both in the lab and in automatic test systems. When used in an ATE system, the Asterion can be ordered without a front panel, at a significant savings, and be equipped with LAN, USB, and RS-232 interfaces bundled as standard. An optional GPIB interface also is available. Intuitive “virtual panel” control GUI software offered with the instrument makes it easy to set up and operate interactively from a computer. Included drivers make it simple to integrate the unit into ATE systems. The Asterion’s initial series launch also includes, as an option, a complete avionics test suite.

New Sorensen ASD FLX DC Power Supplies Feature Modular Design and Flexible Voltage Configuration

SAN DIEGO, November 3, 2015 – AMETEK Programmable Power, the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions (programmablepower.com), introduces the Sorensen ASD FLX Series with a new modular design that allows easy access and flexible voltage assignments.
The water-cooled ASD FLX Series, which offers industry-leading power density (30 kW in a 3U form factor), can now accommodate up to three front-loading modules that can be configured for either 60V or 40V operation (other voltages coming soon) via convenient rear panel dip switches. Despite its 3U size, the ASD FLX’s light-weight chassis allows for easy one-person installation.
The new modular Sorensen ASD FLX Series provides excellent load transient response with outstanding output ripple and noise specifications. Load regulation for both voltage and current is 0.1% of full scale, and the maximum RMS noise is 40 mV. A 50% step load will recover to within 0.75% of original value within 1 ms. Programmable filter bandwidth of the output voltage, current and power monitors lets users customize the load response to their applications.
The unit’s water-cooled design makes it ideal for harsh or demanding applications with stringent air quality requirements, such as clean rooms or industrial environments that are dirty or potentially corrosive and damaging to air-cooled power supplies.
Optional advanced features of the ASD FLX also allow users to program different “fault levels,” enabling detection of output cabling, connections or load problems before they cause critical system problems. Its factory flight data recorder feature has the ability to record parameters such as voltage, current, power, load impedance, faults and input voltages, allowing the factory to easily determine “why” a user has had an unexpected outcome.

Photovoltaic Simulator Provides Higher Output Current and Power, Increasing Rack Space Power Density by 50%

SAN DIEGO, August 25, 2015 – AMETEK Programmable Power, the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions (programmablepower.com), has expanded its industry-leading Elgar Terrestrial Solar Array Simulators (TerraSAS™) line of standalone photovoltaic (PV) simulators.
With the newest Embedded TerraSAS™ (ETS), users can now test isolated and non-isolated string inverters with voltages (Voc) up to 1,000 VDC and currents (Isc) up to 15 A, resulting in a 50% increase in output power compared to the prior 1000X ETS model. The new ETS1000Y is available in three configurations: [5kW] 1,000 VDC @ 5 A, [10kW] 1,000 VDC @ 10 A and [15kW] 1,000 VDC @ 15 A.
The TerraSAS™ PV simulator consists of an agile high-performance, programmable DC power supply with control software and GUI interface, high output isolation, and a unique embedded PV simulation engine that provides the I-V curve in a single standalone unit. The power supplies in the TerraSAS™ PV simulators are typically ten times faster than standard power supplies, allowing users to test even the most advanced solar inverters.
In addition to this industry-leading performance, the new ETS now offers improved Over-Voltage Protection (OVP) and Over-Current Protection (OCP). This allows the device to be used for sensitive simulation applications without tripping, such as inverter testing in electrically “noisy” environments.
AMETEK Programmable Power developed the TerraSAS™ line for testing microgrids, energy storage and inverter test applications. The TerraSAS™ series photovoltaic (PV) simulators are specifically designed to emulate the dynamic electrical behavior of a terrestrial PV solar array. They offer low output capacitance and high closed loop bandwidth to keep up with the advanced Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithms used in today’s grid-tied inverters.
The new ETS versions can be configured to use a 3-phase AC input voltage of 187-242 VAC, 342-440 VAC, or 396-528 VAC. Output voltage noise is less than 0.6 Vpp, and output current noise is less than 200 mApp.
