Sorensen Lab DC Power Supply Extends Capabilities with PowerFlex Switch-Mode Technology

SAN DIEGO, November 25, 2013  AMETEK Programmable Power (www.programmablepower.com), the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions, has expanded its Sorensen XPF60-20 Series line of DC laboratory power supplies.

The new XPF60-20S unit is a single output version of the dual output XPF60-20D. It provides up to 60V and 20A within its 420W power envelope, all in a one quarter rack width x 3U height that uses the minimum possible space for either bench or rack mounting. Since the XPF60-20S has manual control, it will most often find use in conventional bench-top use. The Series, which offers both analog and digital control, features easier-to-use analog controls without sacrificing digital stability.

The Sorensen XPF60-20S and 20D outperform competitive units due to Sorensen’s PowerFlex switch mode technology design. PowerFlex switch-mode technology generates higher currents at lower voltages within an overall power limit envelope. This is an advantage over traditional power supplies that have a fixed current limit for a power capability that reduces directly with the output voltage.

Users also can select from two other variants of the single output version of the XPF60-20 Series. The XPF60-20SA includes fully galvanically isolated, voltage driven remote control for both voltage and current, while the XPF60-20SP provides duplicate rear terminals and digital remote control. Completing the XPF60-20 Series line, the XPF60-20DP dual output model adds digital remote control. Both dual output models also have small footprints so they take up less space on a crowded bench. All XPF60-20 Series units offer connectivity via GPIB, RS-232, USB, LAN and LXI Class C.

Additionally, the XPF60-20S DC power supply offers both Constant Voltage (CV) and Constant Current (CC) operation with automatic cross-over. The unit offers good transient response, built-in power factor correction, and both load and line regulation. The XPF60-20S DC also offers low ripple and noise — for example at 20MHz bandwidth, typically <2mV rms, <10mV pk-pk, (4mV rms maximum), CV mode. Outputs are forward protected by an over-voltage protection (OVP) trip and reverse protected by diode clamp. Users can easily change the OVP range with a screwdriver adjustable preset on the front panel.

The line’s XPF60-20D model is a dual output DC power supply with two completely independent and isolated outputs. The outputs can be wired in series or parallel to achieve up to 120V or 40A within a total power envelope of 840W. Users can set voltages with coarse and fine controls and set currents by a single logarithmic control. An S-Lock (Settings Lock) switches between voltage and current settings and locks them in with a press of the button. This ensures that settings don’t drift over time or are accidently changed.

Also, as an alternative to the unit’s PowerFlex operation, a fixed range mode lets the power supply work as a conventional power supply with fixed ranges of either 60V/7A or 20V/20A at the press of a button. This ensures the output can only be in CV or CC mode and never in power limit, whatever the load. Another button in the fixed range mode lets users customize voltage and current limits to exactly suit their application.

AMETEK Ships Power Grid Simulation System To Chinese Government’s Solar Cell Test Center

810 kVA AC+DC Grid Simulation System to Certify PV Inverters

SAN DIEGO, September 10, 2013 -- AMETEK Programmable Power (www.programmablepower.com), the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions, is now shipping regenerative 810kVA AC + DC source systems. AMETEK most recently shipped a system to the Chinese National Center of Supervision & Inspection of Solar PV Products Quality (CPVT) located in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China. 

The systems, based on AMETEK’s California Instruments RS Series High-Power AC Source, are used for grid simulation in the test and certification of PV (photovoltaic) inverters. Dubbed the RS810, the nine chassis solution consists of three RS270 systems, with each system defined as three 90kVA chassis.  Each RS270 system is capable of generating 270 kVA of 3 ø power at up to 520 Vac (L-L).

Three control chassis  allow engineers at the CPVT to configure the entire solution as a single 810 kVA, three separate 270 kVA, or one 540 kVA with one 270 kVA system. This capability provides the flexibility to size the simulated power grid appropriately for the device being tested as well as increase testing capability throughout.

A key feature of the simulation system is the ability to support the Low Voltage Ride-Through (LVRT) test. This is a critical capability for PV inverters in PV power generation stations to resist, and even support, the utility under specific abnormal voltage drop conditions to avoid large-scale, severe grid voltage drop caused by a chain reaction starting from a single inverter failure.

To test the LVRT capability, the grid simulator is required to generate customized voltage drops when the inverter under test is running at full power in the lab. Due to its unique regenerative mode and hardware design, the RS Series can keep working smoothly through the entire LVRT test process, including the moment of programmed voltage drop when there will be an extremely high peak current imposed by the inverter under test. Additionally, the independent phase control capability and powerful graphical user interface software enables the CPVT engineers to handle different voltage drop levels, asymmetrical phase faults and customized starting phase angle with convenience.  

Key features of the California Instruments RS Series include:

  • Power regeneration. The RS Series can re-capture and return to the facility’s utility grid up to 85 percent of the inverter’s output, or, in other words, up to 85 percent of the energy inputted to the inverter, which is sourced from the facility grid during testing. This reduces costs in two ways:
    • Energy costs directly related to driving the Device Under Test (DUT)
    • Heat load on the facility HVAC system and therefore resultant secondary energy use and cost
  • Simplified test configuration. This approach eliminates the need for traditional AC sources and load combinations with complex controllers.  
  • Sophisticated signal generation and measurement. The RS Series uses a sophisticated digital signal processor-based arbitrary waveform generator and power analyzer for the generation, measurement and documentation of anomalous grid conditions. This integrated, multi-instrument approach effectively eliminates the need for additional equipment to create a complete AC power test system.

New Sorensen SG 500V DC Power Supply Fills Out Programmable DC Product Line

SAN DIEGO June 20, 2013 –  AMETEK Programmable Power (www.programmablepower.com), the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions, has added to its Sorensen SG Series high-power DC power supply line with the introduction of the new Sorensen SG 500V, which can supply up to 500V DC for such applications as driving amplifiers, and testing inverters, batteries and power steering pumps used in electric vehicle/hybrid electric vehicles (EV/HEV). 

The Sorensen SG Series leads the industry in power density and is one of the industry’s most widely used DC power supplies in its class with more than 20,000 units in the fieldThe quality of power supplied by theSorensen SG Series makes it well suited for a broad range of applications. The Sorensen SG Series also offers fast voltage and current slew rates, exceptional load transient response, and low RMS ripple and noise.

The complete SG Series includes a 3U and 6U package configuration with a variety of output and power configurations that allow the user to purchase just the right performance needed for the job. Combinations of these chassis can then be easily paralleled to achieve power levels up to 150 kW.

All of the models in the SG Series are available with either Sorensen General-purpose Intelligent (SGI) control or Sorensen General-purpose Analog (SGA) control. Units with SGI control combine on-board intelligent controls with the outstanding power electronics common to all SG Series supplies. These controls enable sophisticated sequencing, constant power mode and save/recall of common setups, making the SGI-capable unit ideal for repetitive testing using complex or compliance waveforms. The unit features an eight-language, vacuum fluorescent graphical display, context sensitive “soft” keys, and simplified front panel keyboard programming. Units with SGI control come with a standard RS-232C port. GPIB/IEEE 488.2 and LXI Ethernet ports are optional features.

Units with SGA control are designed for users who require simple front panel analog controls or external control. They have the same high- performance power electronics as the SGI and provide essential features such as 10-turn potentiometers for setting voltage and current, and 3½ digit LED readout with front panel over-voltage protection (OVP) preview/adjustment and reset. Units with SGA control come standard with remote analog control. Theycan be fitted with an RS-232C port, a GPIB/IEEE 488.2, and an LXI Ethernet port as optional features.

A popular and unique SG Series option is a factory-installed dust filter. Other options include a low-cost ANSI/NCSL Z540-1 Certificate of Calibration (CoC).
