Configurable FlexSys™ ATE Systems Minimize Development Costs, Test Times and Production Floor Footprints

SAN DIEGO, CA, November 9, 2017 – AMETEK Engineered Solutions Group (ESG), the power and automated test solutions unit of AMETEK Programmable Power, today introduced its first scalable, integrated test and measurement systems designed for use in medium- to high-mix production environments.

FlexSys™ ATE systems are configured from precision power, instrumentation and switching blocks produced by AMETEK Programmable Power and AMETEK VTI Instruments. Applications for these systems include aerospace/defense, environmental stress screening (ESS), and electronics manufacturing testing.

FlexSys™ ATE systems offer wide configuration flexibility and the freedom to choose from multiple instrumentation and switching options:

  • Test operating software

Manufacturers with multiple production facilities that standardize on the FlexSys™ automated test core can reduce their development costs substantially by reusing common code. The system’s flexible modular core software and hardware architecture are designed to scale economically to accommodate changing test requirements. A hardware abstraction layer insulates all instruments from the application code, so obsolete ones can be replaced quickly. The software also is designed to interface easily with standard application development environments for creating application-specific functions.

  • AC/DC power supplies and loads

FlexSys™ systems are configured with Sorensen™ DC power supplies, California™ Instruments and Elgar AC sources, and AMREL power loads. A convenient LAN interface simplifies communications and remote control; intuitive front panel controls allow for manual operation.

  • Modular PXI Express and LXI instrumentation and switching

ATE hardware from AMETEK VTI Instruments includes compact mainframes and high-density plug-in modules minimize the system’s footprint. A 16-slot LXI mainframe supports multi-channel scanning to an optional 6-1/2-digit DMM and high-voltage switching and analog outputs. For data-intensive applications, an optional 9-slot PXI Express hybrid chassis offers 8GB/s system throughput.

  • Interconnect panel and wiring

An expandable 18-slot mass interconnect provides robust termination points for power, RF and signal I/O. Harness assemblies are specified to ensure maximum signal integrity and serviceability. An optional self-test adapter simplifies verifying end-to-end system functionality.

  • Racks and enclosures

Systems are integrated into 24U or 42U racks or enclosures, each equipped with power control/distribution, grounding and cooling capabilities.

New Asterion™ 3kVA High-Power AC Sources Offer High-Power Density and Touch Screen Simplicity

SAN DIEGO, September 19, 2017 – AMETEK Programmable Power, the global leader in programmable AC and DC power test solutions manufacturing such brands as California Instruments™, Sorensen™ and Elgar™ (www.programmablepower.com), has added three new models to its Asterion™ line of AC/DC power sources.

The Asterion 1503 supplies up to 1,500 VA or 1,500 W; the Asterion 2253 supplies up to 2,250 VA or 2,250 W; and the Asterion 3003 supplies up to 3,000 VA or 3,000 W. All three units come in a 2U enclosure, and in both single and three phase models.

Like the lower-power 1U Asterion AC units, the Asterion Models 1503, 2253, and 3003 offer users a compelling combination of intelligence, performance, and modularity that make them the most adaptable and affordable platform available today.

The key to Asterion’s outstanding performance is AMETEK’s iX2™ current-doubling technology. With iX2, as the output voltage decreases from the maximum value to one-half the maximum value, the available output current increases up to two times the rated output current.

This allows Asterion to maintain maximum power through the widest range of voltages. As a result, iX2 current-doubling technology eliminates the need to buy multiple sources or overpowered sources to run tests at different voltage levels, such as when performing low line voltage testing.

Other unique Asterion benefits include Auto-Paralleling and Clock/Lock. With auto-paralleling, users can combine up to six units to achieve 18,000 VA of output power. One unit becomes the master while the rest serve as auxiliary units. The clock/lock feature allows users to easily configure multi-phase systems, such as split-phase, three-phase, or even higher phase count systems.

This allows users to purchase only the power they need today and then easily add more power and/or phases later as required. That scalability, along with the ability to expand easily as required, helps protect the value of the user’s initial investment and allows additional capital spending to be deferred until needed.

While these features are impressive, equally impressive are Asterion's analog specifications.  Asterion offers wide AC and DC output voltage ranges up to 400 Vac and 500 Vdc. Load and line regulation are +/-0.025% and +/-0.015%, respectively. This makes the Asterion more versatile and accurate than most other AC power sources available today.

In addition, test engineers will appreciate the Asterion AC source’s ease of use. AMETEK developed an entirely new user interface for this platform. The intuitive, touch-screen interface, not found on other AC sources, allows users to quickly and easily set up the source and run tests. The Asterion offers a complete avionics test suite as an option, with a programmable frequency between 16Hz and 5,500Hz.

This powerful set of features allows Asterion to be used in both the lab and in ATE systems. If the Asterion is used as part of an ATE system, test engineers can order it without a front panel, which offers significant savings.

Asterion comes with standard LAN, USB, and RS-232 interfaces, and an optional GPIB interface is also available. Intuitive Virtual Panels control GUI software comes bundled with the instrument for easy remote control from a computer. Included drivers allow test engineers to quickly integrate the unit into ATE systems.

New California Instruments MX22.5 AC/DC Power Source Makes Three-Phase Power More Affordable

SAN DIEGO, May 4, 2017AMETEK Programmable Powerhas added a 22.5 kVA unit to its popular California Instruments MX Series II AC/DC Power Sources. The MX22.5 delivers up to 22.5 kVA and can be configured to have single-phase or three-phase outputs in AC, DC or AC+DC mode. The MX22.5 is more economical than the California Instruments MX30, while at the same time offers more features and higher output power than the product family’s MX15 model.

The California Instruments MX Series II provides controlled AC and DC output for a wide variety of automated test equipment and product test applications at an affordable cost. Using state-of-the-art PWM switching techniques, the MX series combines robustness and functionality in a compact floor-standing chassis, no larger than a typical office copying machine. And, this higher power density does not need elaborate cooling schemes or additional installation wiring. Simply place the unit in its designated location (using included casters), plug it in, and the MX Series is ready to operate.

The MX22.5’s innovative features include:

  • Simple operation.  The MX Series can be operated completely from its menu-driven, front-panel controller. A backlit LCD display shows menus, setup data, and read-back measurements.
  • Expandable power levels. Users can combine units to configure systems up to 135 kVA or more.
  • Switching between single-phase and three-phase outputs. Phase mode programming on MX22.5-3Pi allows users to easily switch between single-phase and three-phase output modes.
  • Arbitrary and harmonic waveform generation. Using the latest DSP technology, the MX
  • Series programmable controller is capable of generating harmonic waveforms and arbitrary waveforms to test for susceptibility to harmonics and other power anomalies.
  • Regenerative, bidirectional “green” power. Automatic crossover between source and sink power modes offers regenerative capabilities in AC or DC mode. The power sources can regenerate up to 85% of the rated output power back to the utility grid during sink mode operation when equipped with the -SNK or -SNK-DC option.
  • Power measurements. The MX Series can make a wide variety of measurements in addition to supplying power, including frequency, Vrms, Irms, Ipk, crest factor, real power (watts), apparent power (VA), and power factor. These measurements  are accessible from either the front panel or the remote control interface
  • Remote control. The MX Series can be equipped with RS-232C, USB, IEEE-488, and LAN Interfaces for remote operation and automated test applications.
